Class community and learning through play

Creating and building a classroom community begins with learning the names of each student. Connect with them and see each one for their unique abilities & personality. We will begin our nature play studio tomorrow with each learner holding their stone, which I will give to them as a precious gift of thanks for the learning to come. They’ll scientifically observe its characteristics using their senses. Smooth. Round. Cool. Similar. Imperfect in spots. Beautiful by itself or together.

We will talk about how the stone is strong and when put together with other stones- becomes even stronger. We will play + learn together throughout the year…using our scientific tools and tuning our senses. We shall cultivate their curiosity and deepen their wonder.

As I was making each name stone, I thought about each learner. Some of whom I know from last year and some I have yet to meet. I wondered about their ages, their interests, their journey with learning, their learning styles, and what brings them joy. Many of my wondering will be discovered throughout the year as their Guide.
